This book was published in 1843 by Johann Carl Eduard Buschmann, librarian and member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences. Based on word lists collected by Forster (1773, second Cook voyage), Marchand, Krusenstern, and other navigators or missionaries, and the linguistic work of William of Humboldt, Buschmann offers the first scientific study of the etymology of early Marquesan and Tahitian vocabularies and compares them to Malay languages.
